Spotlight Session 1:
Neuroscience-based Nomenclature (NbN)
Neuroscience-based Nomenclature (NbN)
Background:
Transitioning from indication-based to pharmacologically driven nomenclature is key to promoting rational, evidence-based prescribing in psychiatry. This shift also helps reduce stigma associated with psychotropic medications by emphasizing mechanisms of action rather than disease labels.
Aim:
A pharmacology- and mechanism-based naming system not only serves as a valuable teaching tool but also enhances understanding of how medications interact with specific pharmacological targets.
Methods and Structure:
The Neuroscience-based Nomenclature (NbN) initiative—a groundbreaking collaboration between the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP), American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP), Asian College of Neuropsychopharmacology (AsCNP), International College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP), and the International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR)—has been leading this effort.
